Reorganized Atmospheric Circulation During the Little Ice Age Leads to Rapid Southern California Deoxygenation

چکیده

The magnitude of natural oceanic dissolved oxygen (DO) variability remains poorly understood due to the short duration observational record. Here we present a high-resolution (4–9 years) reconstruction Southern California minimum zone (OMZ) through Common Era using redox-sensitive metals. Rapid OMZ intensification on multidecadal timescales reveals greater DO than observed in instrumental records. An anomalous interval intensified between 1600–1750 CE contradicts expectation better-ventilated mid-depth North Pacific during cool climates. Although influence low-DO Equatorial Intermediate Water Margin was likely weaker this interval, attribute rapid deoxygenation reduced (NPIW) ventilation. NPIW ventilation thus appears very sensitive atmospheric circulation reorganization (e.g., weakened Siberian High and Aleutian Low). In addition temperature-induced gas solubility, forcing under future anthropogenic influences could amplify variability.

Varve and radiocarbon dating support the rapid advance of Jakobshavn Isbr during the Little Ice Age

Large outlet glaciers draining the Greenland Ice Sheet significantly influence overall ice sheet mass balance. Considerable short term (years to decades) retreat and fluctuations in velocity of Jakobshavn Isbræ, western Greenland, illustrate the complex nature by which large outlet glaciers respond to climate change, making predictions of future ice sheet change challenging. To provide a longer...

Abrupt change in atmospheric CO2 during the last ice age

[1] During the last glacial period atmospheric carbon dioxide and temperature in Antarctica varied in a similar fashion on millennial time scales, but previous work indicates that these changes were gradual. In a detailed analysis of one event we now find that approximately half of the CO2 increase that occurred during the 1500-year cold period between Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events 8 and 9 hap...

Was a change in thermohaline circulation responsible for the Little Ice Age?

L ('800-year) and short-term ('20-year) estimates of the rate of deep water formation in the Southern Ocean are in serious disagreement. This disagreement suggests to me that the rate of deep water formation may have been larger during the Little Ice Age (LIA) than it is now. Based on studies of ice-rafted debris in northern Atlantic sediments, a strong case (1) has been made that a cycle avera...

Bicentennial Decrease of the Total Solar Irradiance Leads to Unbalanced Thermal Budget of the Earth and the Little Ice Age

Temporal changes in the power of the longwave radiation of the system Earth-atmosphere emitted to space always lag behind changes in the power of absorbed solar radiation due to slow change of its enthalpy. That is why the debit and credit parts of the average annual energy budget of the terrestrial globe with its air and water envelope are practically always in an unbalanced state. Average ann...
